As someone who has a track record of streamlining government at both the local and state levels, Ron will push for improved customer services, faster permitting, fairness, and more convenience at City Hall for residents and businesses.CITY GOVERNMENT REIMAGINED.&nbsp;All across America, cities like Annapolis have benefitted by adopting the council-manager form of government. This reform is widely recognized as a municipal best practice. In this model, a strong, empowered city council makes all policy and sets the budget ... and the professional staff implements it. This keeps the focus on what is best for Annapolis as a whole community, and takes the politics out of daily operations.

Move forward NOW on resiliency to stop the frequent flooding at City Dock. A more customer-friendly City Hall. Make City Hall more professional, more efficient ... and less political.

A Better Annapolis

Ron has spent many years of his career working on criminal justice issues – both as a prosecutor and as a law enforcement senior civilian commander. Prioritizing public safety means peace of mind for our community … and also keeps us an inviting place for visitors.SUPPORT FOR OUR POLICE OFFICERS.&nbsp;To ensure continued police excellence, and to recruit and retain the most talented officers, we need to be competitive with Anne Arundel County with salary parity for sworn police officers. A Safer Annapolis

City spending rises year after year. The average Annapolis resident – both homeowner and tenant alike – pays&nbsp;nearly 25% more&nbsp;in city taxes today than they did just seven years ago. It is time to stop the skyrocketing of our city taxes and spending.<img src="https://run.imgix.net/e053c21f-958a-407e-be5b-925c366413fa/32a671b8-a90b-4960-a6dc-3e6bc7d3b072/598a0184-2ef3-4af6-924f-c0a804fcde8f.webp?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;bri=0&amp;con=0&amp;sat=0&amp;high=0&amp;shad=0&amp;usm=0&amp;rect=0%2C0%2C4096%2C3098&amp;w=1500" alt="" caption="" align="right" alignwidth="35" variant="base">FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY.&nbsp;It is not the city's money ... it is our money. Ron will always be good steward of our public dollars. This means closely scrutinizing the budget each year, asking the tough questions, and making the hard decisions to keep our taxes lower. As our next Alderman, Ron will always fight against any increases in our city taxes. And it means reducing the city's homestead assessment increase cap from 10% down to just 3%, to protect people from being taxed out of their own homes.PARKING.&nbsp;We need a fairer and friendlier parking system in our city that prioritizes residents over vendor profits. We need to make Premium Parking - the City's contracted vendor - be more responsive to residents. If the vendor does not improve, Ron supports having the City aggressively pursue all legal options to fix or terminate their street enforcement deal in two downtown parking districts.HELP OUR SMALL SHOPS AND LOCAL RESTAURANTS.&nbsp;A strong local economy protects jobs and keeps our city tax base healthy. We need to bring back two-hour free parking in the parts of the downtown business districts where it is needed during business hours to help our struggling small shops and local restaurants survive. And we need to repeal red-tape city ordinances like the one which forces stores to charge customers 10-cents for every paper bag needed to carry away purchases (note: the city law also fines stores $1,000 if they don't make customers pay for paper bags).<img src="https://run.imgix.net/e053c21f-958a-407e-be5b-925c366413fa/b26d9c36-d483-4d5a-9d5e-64290662db77/89e85000-3a06-4110-ad35-dd387465c3d3.webp?ixlib=js-3.8.0&amp;bri=0&amp;con=24&amp;sat=0&amp;high=0&amp;shad=0&amp;usm=0&amp;rect=701%2C408%2C3395%2C2245&amp;w=1500" alt="Water Taxi" caption="" align="right" alignwidth="27" tiltdirection="right" variant="framed">STOP WASTEFUL SPENDING.&nbsp;The City of Annapolis obtained a $2.9 million grant in 2023 to study the Mayor's plan to create an electric ferry boat service between City Dock and Eastport. The project will cost untold millions of tax dollars to start the service, and millions more over the years to maintain it. There is ZERO need for this service when the private sector (Water Taxi) already provides this service ... at no cost to city taxpayers. This is just one wasteful spending example of many in the budget. It's time to cut wasteful spending at City Hall.ECONOMY OF SCALE.&nbsp;County residents pay less for water than Annapolis city residents. This is just one example of an area where consolidating services with the County would benefit us. We need to innovatively look into ways to save money for both our city and our residents. While we should explore ways in the other parts of the city budget to save tax dollars, two vital areas must always remain under city control to ensure proper public safety: our city police and fire departments.

Fiscal responsibility with NO tax hikes. Fix the parking problems downtown. Help our small shops and local restaurants. Repeal the City's 10¢ paper bag fee. Better use of our tax dollars to save money. Stop wasteful spending.

The design, which is part of the broader Maritime Welcome Center plan, has been criticized by Beth Bellis, the City of Annapolis Harbormaster, for failing to meet operational needs, impeding workflow, and neglecting critical functionality for the Harbormaster’s staff.Operational Challenges IdentifiedAccording to a November 19, 2024 memo from the Harbormaster to the Board obtained by Eye On Annapolis, the current design fails to address the core requirements of harbor operations. The office layout lacks adequate space for staff and seasonal employees, creates bottlenecks for customers, and significantly limits the staff’s ability to monitor the harbor effectively. Additionally, the proposed design removes a clear line of sight to the waterways, hindering staff’s ability to respond to emergencies promptly.The plan has been further criticized for not involving the Harbormaster’s staff in its development. “It is clear that the design has not included process mapping, data collection, or simple observation to improve upon current operations,” the report stated. The modular and multi-use nature of the building has been deemed impractical, as the space is intended to host public events and other city meetings, further encroaching on the Harbormaster’s operational requirements.Detailed Critiques of the LayoutThe Harbormaster outlined specific issues with the design, including:<ul><li>Inadequate Space:&nbsp;The proposed 240-square-foot office space is far below the recommended size for the staff, which typically includes four full-time employees and up to 30 seasonal workers.</li><li>Limited Security:&nbsp;Shared amenities, such as kitchens and restrooms, create concerns over cash handling and accountability.</li><li>Accessibility Issues:&nbsp;Staff would need to navigate hallways and public spaces to access the outdoors, delaying emergency responses.</li><li>Obstructed Views:&nbsp;A deck intended for public events and gatherings would block the Harbormaster’s necessary view of the harbor.</li></ul>The memo also noted that the boater facilities, including restrooms, showers, and laundry areas, lack adequate design considerations for security, durability, and controlled access.Recommendations from the HarbormasterTo address these shortcomings, the Harbormaster proposed several changes, including a redesign to prioritize operational efficiency and staff needs. Recommendations include dedicated private office space, secure storage areas for cash and supplies, and a lobby with separate public and staff areas. Additionally, they stressed the importance of clear sightlines to the harbor and direct outdoor access for the staff.Concerns Over Community Use and SafetyThe inclusion of event spaces and public meeting areas has been a point of contention. While these features align with the building’s goal of serving as a Maritime Welcome Center, it was argued they compromise the primary purpose of supporting harbor operations. The design also raises security concerns, calling for increased surveillance and routine police walkthroughs to address potential safety issues.Balancing Public Access and Operational NeedsWhile the Harbormaster acknowledged the importance of creating a multi-functional space that serves the community, they emphasized that the design must not come at the expense of the Harbormaster’s ability to manage the harbor efficiently. As the project moves forward, it is hoped that the City will incorporate these recommendations to better align the design with the operational and safety needs of the waterfront.The redevelopment of City Dock remains a centerpiece of Annapolis’ efforts to revitalize the waterfront. Proposed Harbormaster’s Building at City Dock Faces Criticism from Harbormaster

(WBFF) —&nbsp;As some Maryland residents face the prospect of increased taxes, a study by the Tax Foundation found Maryland is already one of the least competitive tax states in the nation.The study ranked Maryland 46th in tax competitiveness, with only Connecticut, California, New Jersey, and New York ranking lower. Wyoming was identified as the most competitive tax state.Governor Wes Moore acknowledged the issue, stating, "You cannot look at our tax system and say that it works as it should."The state currently imposes numerous taxes, including income, property, sales, business, gas, cigarette, alcohol, vaping, cannabis, and sports gaming taxes. Maryland is also the only state with a digital advertising tax and both an estate tax and inheritance tax.Critics argue that the state's tax policies are driving residents away. "The state is becoming less and less competitive when it comes to taxes, and that means people are going to leave," said David Williams, President of the Taxpayers Protection Alliance.Governor Moore has proposed additional taxes, including a 75-cent delivery tax on packages and an income tax hike on the wealthiest 18 percent of Marylanders. "The people taking on the lion's share of the increase are people who make more than $750,000," Moore said.Researchers warn that high-tax states like Maryland are losing population as taxpayers relocate to states with lower taxes. "The state needs to understand the fiscal implications of tax increases. People will leave, they've already left. And once people start leaving, it puts the state in a very dangerous fiscal position," Williams said. (BCT Design Group/Courtesy photo)By KATIE McDERMOTTOn Dec. 5, the City of Annapolis Planning Commission approved the City Dock plan’s Maritime Welcome Center (MWC), failing to resolve or even question an array of inconsistent explanations as to why this new building was essential for the downtown resiliency project and in the public interest. If built as planned, the Maritime Welcome Center will be a telling edifice representing how city officials can myopically focus on playthings for tourism rather than the priority needs of city residents.&nbsp;The city Planning and Zoning Department staff report and testimony from consultants asserted that the MWC was within the parameters of the zoning code and continued to promote the fairy tale that the MWC plan was a consensus plan from a citizen-staffed City Dock Action Committee five years ago. However, the resulting City Dock Action Committee report was focused on resiliency measures and did not recommend the current MWC plan. In fact, many of its members have spoken out against the MWC plan now approved.&nbsp;The city’s planning and zoning director framed the MWC as&nbsp;essential&nbsp;to the city’s resiliency and flood mitigation efforts. Unexplained was how the building is needed to achieve any of the resiliency objectives identified for the City Dock area. It is not explained because the premise is simply not true.&nbsp;The Planning Commission hearing, like earlier public meetings, was a cheerleading session for the MWC plan where some commission members extolled how great the building looks. One commission member asked why there shouldn’t be a public yacht club. The chairman noted that other buildings are too big too, like the Choptank restaurant on Ego Alley. One commission member seemed to offer a partial restriction on commercial use, but that was swatted away by the seasoned chairman, at least for now.&nbsp;For misguided priorities, the most obtuse was the consultant testimony that the multi-function MWC was justified as an aesthetic counterpart to the two other parks at City Dock (Susan Campbell and the new grassy park to be built as part of the resiliency plan). So, the MWC is needed because letting the beautiful historic Annapolis Harbor be the main attraction at City Dock is just too boring?&nbsp;Mayor Gavin Buckley made a theatrical speech that anyone who opposes the MWC should be ashamed of themselves. An update from the mayor on when the FEMA grant monies are coming in to do the resiliency work would have been more informative.&nbsp;Of course, the mayor knows that city residents support resiliency and the concerns expressed about the MWC are not an obstacle to overdue resiliency measures. On Sept. 4, 2024, Mayor Buckley attended a community listening forum hosted by Historic Annapolis and the Ward One Residents’ Association where over 150 city residents explained their strong support for adequate resiliency measures and significant concerns with the MWC. Comments sensibly offered by city residents include reducing the size of the building to its essential government functions for the harbormaster, not using it for commercial purposes, or simply renovating the current harbormaster building consistent with sustainability principles. Many citizens expressed concern for the lack of transparency about the project and the costly diversions from real resiliency efforts.&nbsp;So many things are going on it is hard to follow or even remember that the total resiliency cost projections went from $42 million in 2022 to $100 million in 2024, in the dark with no open forums for public debate. In spring 2024, it was presented as a done deal with enhanced amenities that in the aggregate are costing millions. Then, the MWC was oyster bars, commercial spaces, a city conference room for dignitaries, a commercial kayaking operation and a small part devoted to the harbormaster function, some of which would be in the Burtis House as well. Its costs have been estimated anywhere from $8.6 million to $20 million.In December 2024, after public outcry, the consultants said the building is mostly for harbormaster functions and visiting boater amenities. Also identified was a vague education function, explained as possibly a sailing school like the local yacht clubs. The consultants testified that the city needs a place where people can put their toes in the water.&nbsp;Ignored in all this expensive consultant blather is that the Maritime Advisory Board has voiced its safety concerns about launching kayaks and stand up paddle boards at this location in the harbor and local water folks know it is a congested and treacherous area. There are other places to dip toes and kayaks, according to the city’s Public Access Water Plan floating around. Also completely lost is whether the planned resiliency measures are even adequate. The building size has not been reduced despite its alleged reduced purpose.&nbsp;The current harbormaster building is planned for demolition and this action is under legal challenge due to alleged non-compliance with city regulations — a challenge labeled “non-serious” by some elected officials, but the city law office failed to get the suit dismissed. The building could be renovated without undermining any resiliency objective, but city officials decline to contemplate any alternatives to the current MWC plan. They just do not have the vision to imagine anything but an oversized public building on the water’s edge, despite all those foreign trips to get educated on resiliency and sustainability. Among the most severe were cases of rape, sexual assault, attempted robbery, and reckless endangerment.Officers were called to the 100 block of Francis Noel Way on December 1 regarding a juvenile rape that occurred in August. The victim reported that the suspect threatened to release a video of the incident, which was later posted on Instagram. Authorities are continuing the investigation with the involvement of Child Protective Services.A domestic violence case on November 30 in the 1300 block of Tyler Avenue involved allegations of strangulation and sexual assault by a 32-year-old man from Annapolis. Officers apprehended the suspect at the scene, and the victim was taken to the hospital for evaluation. The Criminal Investigation Section (CIS) is leading the inquiry.In the same area, a 25-year-old male victim reported being attacked in the early hours of November 30. The suspect attempted to steal his money and then assaulted him, using a belt to strangle the victim. Police arrested the suspect, a 27-year-old Annapolis man, at the scene.An unauthorized vehicle use incident escalated into reckless endangerment on December 1 near Forest Drive. A 43-year-old man from Nicaragua allegedly took a 2014 Honda Civic , belonging to the passenger, without permission while the victim was inside the car. When the victim attempted to escape at a red light, the suspect sped off, causing her to fall and sustain injuries. The Virginia resident, who used to live in Maryland, stopped to eat at Iron Rooster before strolling down Main Street, eventually buying a soft cotton shirt for his son-in-law from the Cotton Company.“My wife says that she hasn’t met a guy who likes shopping as much as me,” he said. “The other guys will just want to divorce themselves [from]&nbsp;the whole shopping experience and to do everything, but I like going out and seeing things.”Though online retailers sometimes offer better prices, Jaworski said, he prefers shopping in person.“You don’t feel it online,” he said of buying clothing.Getting a sense for what a product looks like in person is a draw for many shoppers, said M.B. Donovan, a salesperson at Kim Hovell Fine Art. As part of an effort to obtain a $33 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to move the $72.1 million City Dock project forward, officials from Annapolis, the state and the federal government met Friday to discuss the flood protection provisions of the plan.Asked what officials discussed, Mitchelle Stephenson, spokesperson for the city, said in an email Monday that Mayor Gavin Buckley “stress[ed] why [the project] is critically important for our downtown businesses.”Stephenson said that FEMA officials “walked [officials] through a slide deck of issues that must be addressed [during this process] including coastal management, environmental reviews, aquatic animals, National Historic Preservation Act, archeological impacts, among others.”There were no “surprises” for the city at the meeting, she added. The Capital Gazette was not invited to the meeting.“The Friday meeting was part of the process for this grant, but also an opportunity for all of the people involved to meet one another and for the federal officials to walk the site,” Stephenson said.As of Monday, the grant process was still “in progress,” Stephenson said, and it is unclear when the grant will be approved. However, a FEMA spokesperson said the agency’s aim was to ensure a 2025 groundbreaking.“The meeting included presentations outlining the history of floods in the area, an overview of the scope of work, and a detailed breakdown of steps needed to move the project’s eligibility review forward,” said a spokesperson for FEMA in an email Monday.&nbsp; “The meeting concluded with [a] review of a recently developed tentative timeline, including milestones, which will guide the remainder of the review process.”The redevelopment project includes turning the pay-to-park area from Craig Street to Susan Campbell Park into a raised earthen berm to hold back floodwaters. The project also includes a flood barrier system connecting the Naval Academy on Prince George Street, wrapping around Ego Alley, ending at Compromise Street. A planned park will feature a fountain, a pergola, a stage and other amenities.The meeting was supposed to take place in October; however,&nbsp;it was canceled&nbsp;due to FEMA’s involvement with recovery efforts from Hurricane Helene, Stephenson said. In May, Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley said&nbsp;the city could work on other aspects of the project, such as Compromise Street and green space, while awaiting approval of the grant.“This is an important mitigation project,” Ed McDonough, spokesperson for the Maryland Department of Emergency Management, said in an email Monday. “We look forward to continuing to work with the City of Annapolis and FEMA on it. Ald. Huntley all-in for new, multimillion dollar, multi-story building at City Dock waterfront

By MEGAN LOOCKThe City of Annapolis reached a new record for the most flooding events experienced in the city’s history, according to new data from the Annapolis Office of Emergency Management.The city has flooded 74 times in the past 8 months, according to data provided to The Capital Gazette from OEM. This is nearly ten more than the previous record of 65 set in 2019.&nbsp; The data accounts for flooding from January through the end of August, said David Mandell, the deputy director of emergency management.In May, a preliminary analysis of flooding indicated that if the frequency continues, the city is on track to having 120 flooding events this year, Kevin Simmons, director of OEM said in May. While Mandell said that he thinks the city is still on track for reaching this amount, they “can’t be certain until [they] see the final number at the end of the year.”This year, the city has faced what OEM calls plenty of moderate flooding events, where waters reached at most 3.3 feet above normal levels and dozens of what they label minor flooding events, where water reaches 2.6 feet above normal levels, Mandell said Wednesday.However, the city faced two record-breaking floods this year. In January, flood waters climbed to 5.1 feet above normal levels, closing many businesses on Dock Street. January’s flood ranks as the city’s third-worst flood. Nearly six months later, in August, Tropical Storm Debby brought the ninth-worst flood in the city’s history. At a recent meeting with Maryland officials, Annika Jacobson, Stockholm’s special coordinator for climate action, highlighted that Stockholm’s success in sustainability is rooted in the trust its citizens have in their government. According to Jacobson, “There’s a lot of trust in the city governance and the [city’s] political ability, political leadership.” But this assertion should give anyone familiar with Annapolis politics pause, as the level of trust between residents and their local government is vastly different.To suggest that Annapolis could follow in Sweden’s footsteps ignores some glaring realities. First and foremost, Sweden is not just a different country—it’s a vastly different kind of society. Sweden operates under a socialist framework, where high taxes are the norm and support for climate policies is bolstered by a generous social safety net. The country’s high cost of living, including steep gasoline prices and food costs, is largely accepted by citizens who also receive comprehensive healthcare, education, and welfare services in return. The Swedish model works for Sweden, a nation where the average citizen trusts their government to manage these trade-offs.Annapolis, on the other hand, has a long history of government opacity and broken promises. From controversies surrounding police report transparency to the funding of the City Dock resilience project, the city has consistently shown a lack of open communication with its residents. The most recent example is the “oh-the-media-found-out-so-we-better-say-something-about-this-trip” to Sweden by city officials. The trip, supposedly for research on sustainable ferries, was not disclosed until the media caught wind of it. This lack of transparency only deepens the divide between city government and residents.Moreover, local government initiatives, like the proposed electric ferries for Annapolis, face real legal hurdles. The Jones Act (1920) and the Passenger Vessel Services Act (1898) both prohibit non-American-made ferries from operating in U.S. waters without stopping at a foreign port, and it seems to fly in the face of the spirit of the Buy American Act, which mandates the purchase of American-made products for public use. While the Buy American Act is mandated for Federal procurement, States are not required to comply with the act. Simply put, importing Sweden’s electric ferry system would violate federal law, making this vision both impractical and legally questionable.Alderman Rob Savidge’s claim that Annapolis is “so far behind” Sweden in responding to the climate crisis completely misses the point. Of course, we’re behind. Sweden’s model is built on a foundation of high taxes and government trust—two things that Annapolis, and frankly, much of the United States, doesn’t have. Trying to mimic a system that thrives on public trust in a city where that trust is severely lacking is doomed to fail. The oft-cited prevalent use of bicycles in the Netherlands (the other field trip taken last fall) and in Stockholm might be out of necessity–the average cost per gallon for gasoline in Sweden is $6.28. Plus, not only are the European cities more densely populated, they have invested in the infrastructure to accommodate biking and walkingInstead of attempting to replicate an unsustainable model for Annapolis, the city should focus on realistic, homegrown solutions that align with the community’s values and legal framework. Others asked about the cost of maintenance or opposed watermen potentially selling seafood from the center.Other topics drawing scrutiny included the planned<a href="https://www.capitalgazette.com/2024/04/03/city-dock-historic-preservation/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"> fountain, pergola and stage</a>&nbsp;and the pending $33 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.Previous feedback from the public led the developers to return to the council with a smaller concept for the welcome center but a <a href="https://www.capitalgazette.com/2024/05/15/developers-present-annapolis-officials-with-10-million-maritime-welcome-center-plans-weve-heard-a-lot-and-weve-redesigned/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">higher price tag of $10 million</a>, a $3 million increase from its initial estimate.Laurie Sullivan, a resident, is concerned about maintaining the view of&nbsp;the bay from Ego Alley.“We’re trying to do a lot of things in one building, which then necessitates a bigger building,” she said of the center. “Do we have to have all of those functions in one single space, or is it possible to break those functions up into alternate spaces, smaller spaces on the periphery, or even into existing buildings?”As proposed, the welcome center will be attached to the rear of the Capt. William H. Burtis House, a historic waterman’s house dating to the 1880s. The first floor would include space for an outdoor maritime classroom with&nbsp;public water access for&nbsp;small watercraft, a Waterman’s Co-op where&nbsp;watermen could sell their catch, and&nbsp;a lounge. Showers, washing machines and dryers, public restrooms and private storage space would be in the basement.Ron Gunzburger, a candidate for Ward 1 alderman in 2025, questioned who the tenants of the center will be. Last night, a committee of Democratic Party political insiders selected progressive activist Harry Huntley as the interim Alderman to fill the vacant Ward One seat in Annapolis for the next year. Only one voting member of that selection committee resides in Ward One."I congratulate Harry on his selection, and look forward to facing &nbsp;off against him next year. Those differences present voters with a clear choice," said Democratic candidate Ron Gunzburger.The seat was not filled by special election because former Alderwoman Elly Tierney held her resignation paperwork for a few days beyond the legal cutoff date to trigger an election. Instead, her timing allowed the voters to be bypassed."The residents will certainly get their say in the September 2025 primary. William Burtis House and the planned stage that will be added as part of the City Dock Park.“The reality is for the businesses, the restaurants, the people’s livelihoods depend on it, [as do] tourist dollars that we also like when people come and go to the City Dock area. We need to decouple the resiliency aspects of it, so we can move forward with FEMA [funding] and other federal and state funding for the project, and get that moving as soon as possible,” he said. “Then as a community, we can continue to discuss the evolving ideas for the improvements and reach consensus about what’s best, and maybe the residents will openly settle on the current proposal.”When it comes to housing, “Affordability is a problem in Annapolis, particularly in Ward 1, so that’s why I do want to address what the city spends, what they spend it on, where their priorities are, and essentially what they’re looking to do with taxes,” he said.He said he wants to “contain rising spending” in city budgets to keep property taxes from “rising further.” He also wants to continue discussions about affordable housing in locations that the city is already considering, pointing to the Old Public Works facility on Spa Road as an example. He said that he couldn’t “imagine situations [in which] I would vote to raise taxes because I think the city has a good-sized budget now.”Gunzburger also said he wants to see the city hire and retain enough police officers and firefighters and regain the police department’s accreditation with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, a voluntary commitment to professional standards and management. Former Hogan official launches campaign for Annapolis council seat

By MEGAN LOOCKThe Annapolis Democratic Central Committee postponed a scheduled hearing to fill outgoing Ward 1 alderman Elly Tierney’s seat until September.The hearing, originally set to take place Aug. 26, was postponed to “ensure a smooth transition and compliance with Annapolis City code” because the city will not accept the results of the vote until after Sept. 1, which is when Tierney’s resignation is “official,”&nbsp; said Josh Falk, president of the Annapolis Democratic Central Committee.“We felt it would be in better compliance if we waited until after or on that date,” he said.The central committee will be considering five candidates: Ron Gunzburger, Genevieve Torri, Tom Sells, Tom Krieck and Harry Huntley. The central committee is not accepting additional applications after the Aug. 20 deadline.The public meeting will be held Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. on Zoom. The link will be posted to the Annapolis Democratic Central Committee’s <a href="https://annapolisdems.org/w/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">website.</a>In May, Tierney, a Democrat, announced that she would be<a href="https://www.capitalgazette.com/2024/05/17/annapolis-elly-tierney-retirement/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow"> retiring from politics</a> to move to Massachusetts with her husband. Ron spoke on the need for more civility in US politics. He asserted we must reach a tipping point as a nation where the public finally says Enough! to the toxic polarization tearing us apart. If we do that - rewarding good behavior and punishing bad behavior from our leaders - we can make a better nation.

Ron's remarks last fall to the National Governors Association meeting in New Hampshire, on the need for more civility in US politics. We need to see those on the other side not as enemies, but as fellow Americans and neighbors (even when we think they are terribly wrong or misguided). If we all start doing that - on both sides - it can make for a better nation.
